Live Ride Review, GuyKesTV: Guy Kestevan live ride review Dec 2020

“The RTD is a very practical bike that ticks all the boxes and rides just so smoothly. What really stands out is the ride quality, a really damped, smooth feel that the RTD has in absolute spades. Its right up there with good steel and titanium bikes but with less weight than most. The way it eases speed onto the hill means it is no slouch. Always quick to pick up the pace. That smooth ride means the longer you go the less you fatigue and the better it gets. It just enjoys being ridden. The RTD is right up there with other top makers of alloy frames, it is really is a beautiful bike to ride. The geometry and room for big tyres means its handling gives a relaxed confidence. I’ve yet to find something this bike doesn’t make really enjoyable! Its really got me excited and got me out on it way more than I was expecting.”

We have put everything we have learned during the last 17 years of alloy frame design and manufacture into this completely new and very advanced Scandium alloy road bike frame. Whilst other manufacturers focus has been on carbon, we believe that by putting the same development into alloy tubing, we have created a frame that rivals carbon in many ways, and hands down beats it on price.

Damian Mason of Kinesis UK said ‘Kinesis are the only frame manufacturer to use Super Plastic Forming (SPF) on their alloy frames. Most manufacturers use Hydroformed tubes, but with SPF we can create lighter tubes and more intricate shapes that will build into a lighter and stiffer frameset.’

The RTD went through multiple prototypes to fine tune the geometry to make a frame that was stable when loaded, yet handled well and felt fast on an Alpine pass. As with the geometry, the tubing shape has been carefully selected to maximise the riding characteristics of the RTD. An oversized down tube, flared top tube and tapered head tube combine to make a laterally stiff front end. Whilst the flattened seat stays and narrow gauge seat tube add a level of compliance in the rear end.

We have integrated the gear cables and rear brake hose into the headtube. The absence of cable port holes on the down tube allow us to use a lighter weight down tube and has the added benefit of cleaner lines to the frame.

We have combined our flagship Scandium alloy frame with a full carbon monocoque from leading fork manufacturer Columbus. The RTD is fitted with the all new Columbus Futura fork. The Futura has everything we wanted in a fork for the RTD – masses of tyre clearance, longer fork offset, internal routing, mudguard compatibility, all wrapped up in a lightweight package.

As with our premium titanium GTD frameset, we have partnered with GW engineering and we are supplying the RTD with their patented ‘Switch Lever’ hollow Thru Axles with a removable lever.

The RTD uses adaptable cable ports which allow you to build your frame with exactly the right cable routing for whether you are running Di2 or mechanical gearing with either a 1x or 2x set up.

The Kinesis RTD frame has the full complement of bottle mounts and mudguard mounts, enabling you to build your bike up for your next epic adventure.

Pushing the limits has been a draw for us at KinesisUK for almost two decades now. Is the open road is your calling? But is something missing? The desire to compete maybe? You feel the need for a target, a focal point for your adventures. You feel confident you can ride for days at a time and now it's time to extend your boundaries. Time to experience new places, new countries even.

At Kinesis UK our strong connection with distance cycling goes back to those long winter rides on our four-season bikes which helped define our brand. Reliable, comfortable and affordable, Kinesis frames are often spotted in the ultra-endurance races for good reason.

We became a checkpoint sponsor of the Transcontinental Race (TCR) in 2016 and started working with its founding father, the late Mike Hall. This gave us a deeper insight into what it takes to prepare for and to actually complete events like the TCR. We became inspired to design a bike that would allow more cyclists to dream big about exploring their personal limits in a self-supported bike race way and one that would double up as a great fast paced road workhorse for training.

The RTD is a new bike designed for repeated days in the saddle. We gained knowledge from our brand ambassadors and made observations from the TCR race. Compared to our 'Racelight' geometry we've made subtle changes in frame geometry and detailing which contribute to significant improvements in all-day comfort on the RTD. The frame showcases our new internally routed headtube which cleanly moves cables away from the down tube and improves bag fitting options and ultra clean looks. The new thin-flat seat stays improve shock absorption along with the 27.2 diameter seat post diameter. The TCR is our first modern Scandium Alloy road frame and this material delivers low weight with fast paced performance.

The RTD's strong graphical presence is clearly linked to our Tripster AT model. Whereas the AT was graphically detailed with Mike Hall, the RTD is very much our way of honouring Mike and the inspiration he gave us. The four bands at the rear of the top tube signify the four checkpoints in the TCR race. The seat tube graphic and overall style is derived from original drawings shared between Kinesis UK designer Matt Gray and Mike when working on the Tripster AT. Drawings from Mike showed the bold graphics marked as black on a simple white background and both agreed the pure simplicity of this two-tone approach really struck a chord with the stripped back nature of bike packing races. So, the RTD is very much inspired by the TCR racers pushing their limits every day, the race itself and Mike. The sale of RTD frames directly feeds back into the financial support we give the TCR race and our involvement as a sponsor. We like to think of it like a circle of life. Paying forward to good times on the ride. RTD is available to everyone and inspiring to the end, just like the Transcontinental bike race itself.

Cyclingnews.com Nov 2020 Verdict

“… a stable, smooth, fat-tyre friendly machine that makes long distances easy….loaded with practical features. Where it really surprises though is in the lively, sprung responsiveness that so many carbon fibre bikes lack. Add an affordable price and this is a really charismatic and enjoyable bike that’ll delight on day-to-day commuting, fast training rides and weekend epics.”

Review Submission by Anders Holt – May 2020

I’ve been riding this marvellous bike for a couple of thousand kilometres now since March 2020 as my road bike and am absolutely satisfied.

"The choice of scandium combined with the high-end custom Columbus fork is a great decision by the brand and brings a terrific ride quality to the bike.
The versatility and detailing including the head tube routing, the tyre clearances & flexibility in groupset choice are part of what makes Kinesis frames so popular with so many riders".

Cycling Plus - Road Test - January 2019

"The new Kinesis RTD will make you re-evaluate your aluminium frame performance expectations".

"It has a character that wills you to grab the bars and go. And to keep on going".

"..knowing that it’s built to withstand the rigours of an event like the Transcontinental Race…is very reassuring".

SUMMARY:

The Kinesis RTD is our winner. It’s able to isolate you from wintry road slurry, while delivering an engaging ride that’s instantly enjoyable.

Its excitingly urgent acceleration is as addictive as it is surprising, and is matched with refined handling that’s relaxed but
nimble, and a fine build that includes the all-important practical luggage and mudguard considerations.

All of which helps it take the win in the all-weather class.

BikesEtc - Best in Test - January 2019

• Kinesis’ new RTD is an impressive bike that meets its brief perfectly.
• It’s a smooth, quick and fun bike to ride and the frame is well designed, while its clean cable routing gives it a sleek look.
• With a great choice of components throughout, it all adds up to what is, quite simply, a superb bike.

BEST IN TEST CONCLUSION

It’s Kinesis that’s delivered a bike which exceeded all our expectations of what we thought an alloy bike can offer.

The RTD may be designed with long-distance races or bikepacking treks in mind, but in reality, it’s a fantastic bike to ride over any distant – short or long.

With a superbly designed frameset at its heart, we reckon the Kinesis RTD might just be destined to become a bit of a classic.

Angela Walker (Transcontinental Race Finisher in 2017) Review - December 2018

If I’m totally honest, when my RTD arrived, I didn’t see myself riding this shiny, new bike throughout the winter months. I expected to do a couple of 200km audaxes on it just to see how it handled, then put it away until the spring and carry on riding all of my winter miles on my beloved old Racelight TK3 but I’m afraid that since I took delivery of the RTD my TK3 has been steadily gathering dust in the hall. In short, I’m hooked.

Aside from aiming to qualify for Paris-Brest-Paris, I’ve not made any further plans for my long-distance adventures in 2019, but you can be sure that wherever my plans take me, I’ll definitely be riding my RTD.

Richard Curtis Review - October 2018

"Yes, the geometry is set up to be forgiving and work with you over long distances, but equally is no slouch when you want to put the power down on shorter rides. Kinesis have found the very fine line between comfort and speed, which so many riders crave."...

"There is just something about the RTD that is special.

Perhaps because there is a little bit of me in the bike, a bit of the TCR, a homage to Mike Hall and a bit of every ride who has ever pushed themselves further than they thought possible, further than their mental or even physical limits first allowed.

This bike is for the doers, the triers, the riders who want to explore, test themselves, push that little bit further than they did last week, the riders who dream, have ambition to ride further and think bigger, those who refuse to give up and will keep coming back until they achieve their sacred inner goal."

"The RTD was built by a team full of passion, for the passionate."
