R1 ROAD BIKE

BIKE TEST WINNER
Cycling Plus - Jan 2020

"Our winner is – at the time of writing – the first Kinesis R1 in the UK. Based on its lively ride feel, up-to-date 1x drivetrain, simplicity and execution, it’s a deserved winner.

Riding year round in whatever the weather gods throw at you is hard enough, but the R1 feels fresh and a very capable and rewarding place to be."

£1,680.00

The R1 is the latest complete bike from Kinesis UK, following on the success of the G2 complete gravel bike and heavily influenced by our award winning Kinesis RTD and 4S road frames. The R1 is a 1x road bike aimed at riders of all abilities and experiences.

With the MTB and Cyclocross bikes now firmly entrenched with 1x and the burgeoning Gravel scene going the same way, we’ve seen many road riders experimenting and using 1x Road set ups, including many members of the KinesisUK Team.

The R1 is aimed at the cyclist craving simplicity, reliability and the capability a 1x drivetrain can offer: in short a bike they can just get on and ride and have fun.

The R1 would make a great everyday road bike with an easy-to-use and easy-to-maintain drivetrain for their commute, their spins into the countryside and their trip to cafe. With this in mind we have specified the R1 with true ride-anywhere gear ratios, more than enough for the steepest climbs and the fastest descent. The R1 is fitted with drop handlebars with slightly wider bars than you would usually find on a road bike, and they also have a 10 degree flare. Wider bars give more ride control and capacity for bar bags (bike packing) which are very popular now on day rides even. Plus plenty of room for your handlebar furniture (lights, GPS, bell, Phone bracket etc)

We’ve also specified room for a 30c tyre with full mudguards, and mounts for a pannier rack. The R1 features our Kinesis Rider Fit Geometry to give better fit and more consistent handling for a wider range of riders. The smallest size has a semi sloping top tube for greater seat post extension increasing the comfort. Longer reaches (recommended for use with shorter stems) mean there is less toe overlap on the smaller sizes and improves the handling on the larger sizes eliminating the need to run a long stem to achieve the correct fit.

Choosing the correct bike size for you depends on the type of bike your after, your height, your riding style, and your preference of fit.

A correct fitting bike will provide a more comfortable, more efficient and more fun ride.

Kinesis’s bike size guide gives you some general advice on choosing the right size. It is a guide only and we always recommend visiting one of our stores or contacting one of our experts from our contact us page.

To get started, think about your style of riding, measure your height and see the sizing guide below.

However there is no substitute for good old fashioned advice from your local bike shop, we have a list of dealers here and they will be able to help you with your sizing and bike setup prior to building it.

VERDICT:
A simple, versatile and highly effective single-ring all-rounder

Well geared • Excellent comfort • All-year potential • Sprightly performance • Classy looks

Review Submission by Gabriel - October 2020

"I got the 60cm frame back in early June. It's SUCH a beautiful bike up close, classic style almost looks like steel. Light, very responsive and comfortable. Fast on roads and stable and fun on forest paths and light gravel. Really loving it. Thanks kinesis!"

"You might think that a straight-tubed frame would feel a little dull, but the R1 has an instant zing when pressing the pedals."

"It’s an elegant frame with a tapered head-tube leading to pleasingly round main tubes and seatstays. The chainstays are subtly ovalised vertically and crimped for chainring clearance."

"The high 44×11 gear is equivalent to 52×13 and pedalling at 35mph doesn’t require more than a normal cadence. I didn’t find the gear jumps to be a problem, and there’s no ratio duplication."
