DISCOVERING THE IOW ON BIKES

Words and Photos by Rupert Robinson

Sarah and I decided to take a short 4 day jaunt on the Isle of Wight with just our new Kinesis bikes and bike packs.

I have a Arran Blue Tripster AT and my wife Sarah has a Sweet Orange 5T DISC.

This is the first time we have done this and we opted to get the train from Brighton over to Portsmouth Harbour and then the Foot Passenger Ferry over to Ryde.

To make things easier we had already pre-booked a 2 night stay on Airbnb in the heart of The Red Squirrel Trail.

3

Day 1 we set off around the coast towards St Helens and onto the trail for Newchurch stopping at Pedallers café for coffee and cake on route. 15 Miles.

4

Day 2 had been decided we'd head North on the trail to Cowes then West towards Yarmouth and down towards Freshwater Bay before heading to Shorewell and finally back to Newchurch where we re-joined the trail.

5

The Red Squirrel Trail is a 23 mile old railway line route and mostly off-road, which takes in estuaries, woodland, farmland, downland, and a stretch of the Island’s fantastic coastline. 51 Miles.

6

Day 3 we headed to the southern side of the island and onto further accommodation in Shanklin, taking in Sandown's esplanade which has traditional seaside cafes, beach shops and a nice pier.

7

The route on day 3 included Ventnor, Niton and Godshill. 31 Miles.

8

Day 4 was back along 'The Red Squirrel Trail' to Sandown Bay

9

And a slightly different route along the Esplanade through Brading, Whitefield Wood and back to Ryde. 11 Miles.

10

A nice little trip that covering most of the island in just over 100 miles.
