Singletrack - Kinesis UK Has Built A Pinion Gearbox Bike

We took a Phase and turned it into what we think is an ideal winter trail bike for UK riding. This is very much a special project and we certainly would make sure the finished article was fully painted and finished!

We have been experimenting between gearing as well as, we would look to have adjustable dropouts to take up chain tension and given the implications of just how long the service life of a gearbox is; probably a split stay to allow for a Gates belt drive for longer service.

Is 27.5in a wheelsize that would suit riding you'd like to do with a pinion? Would a 29er platform be more suitable? Or do people want to go further with a platform that might work better loaded up with 3 bottle cage mounts and a head angle that might suit a rigid fork?

We worked with some friends at Pinion in Germany to take a PHASE frame and create what we think could be the ultimate all season trail bike. This doesn't mean it needs to stay trail, but we sure are looking forward to riding the platform.

Designed and manufactured by hand in Germany, Pinion transmissions keep working reliably and are virtually maintenance-free. The compact design provides an integrated, reduced design for innovative bicycles – Pinion bikes are excellently balanced and technically perfect. They reduce the wonderful feeling of riding a bicycle to the essentials.

• Maxlight Phase frame (medium) adapted by Pinion to receive their C1.12 Magnesium cased 12spd gearbox.

• Pinion Crank arms

• DMR Zone wheelset (Boost Rear)

• X-Fusion Sweep RL2 140mm

• WTB Trail Boss 2.4 tyres

• X-Fusion SLS dropper post 125mm

• Surly 21T rear sprocket

• Praxis 32T Chainring

• DMR Defy Stem and Wingbar with 35mm clamping

• TRP Slate T4 brakes with 2 TRP piece rotors

• DMR Stage Saddle

• DMR V8 Pedals

The gear box means no grinding gears, chain tension changes, cassette wear and you can change gear whilst standing still which makes it perfect for technical riding!

We also re-engineered the frame to drop the BB by 30 mm using a new yoke area specific to 27.5 in wheels.

We think the frameset would retail at around £1500 with the gearbox included but of course in this test Phase... things might change.
